WHO WE ARE

Soroptimist International is a world wide volunteer service organization for
women in business, management and all professions. The name
Soroptimist was created from the Latin “sorer” meaning sister, and
“optima” meaning best. Soroptimist is perhaps best described as 'the best
for women'. From the founding of the first Soroptimist club in Oakland,
California, in 1921, through to the present day where over 3000 clubs are
growing throughout the world. Soroptimists have continued to strive to
achieve 'the best for women' in every sphere of their lives. A Soroptimist is
a leader in her community. She believes that by joining with other women
and engaging in the service of her community and society, she can make
the world a better place for humankind. Soroptimists work for the
advancement of the status of women, high ethical standards, human rights
for all, equality, development, and peace. Soroptimist International is
committed to service to local, national and international communities, active
participation in decision-making at all levels of society.

Our club, Soroptimist International of Indianapolis, is in District II of the
Midwestern Region. That is in SI of the Americas Federation, one of the four
federations world-wide under the international umbrella of the Soroptimist
International which is the largest volunteer classified women's organization
in the world.
